Pedigree Cats Catamaran

Creation...................

In the beginning..........customers have an idea of how they would like their custom catamaran to look, its their cat and they want it to show.  We have a few concept artists that they can work with directly, giving the artist a size they think they need and tell him what they have in mind and certain things they have seen and would like them incorporate.  They artist then starts sketching with that information and they head down the track to create their dream.....

Beginning Sketches

Working with multilhull designers at or about the same time, like Stuart Bloomfield, he was chosen as the designer of this new cat...............Deciding the size they think they want, working with in their budget, Stuart gets started, using the latest in technology for structural and speed requirements as well as the load and basic floor plan.  This basic design below here, will be the foot print to be used through out.  The client has a lot of time to create what they want above the water line, but at or very close to the DWL, it has to be as he says.  This hull shape has all the reasons it must be followed, performance, structural needs as well as balance.  The mast must be where it is and showing here, the client must work around it placement, the same with the engines, rudders, tankage, which can not be used for balance, the trim does not change as water and fuel are used.  These are displacement hulls and if followed, will deliver what the client wants it to do and the designer has designed it to do.

After the concept artists gets further along, you can make changes and notes to tweak it a bit more, here, the clients are working with Sasa of design industries  in Yugoslovia.....This is a Motor Sailer and will be powered by twin Yanmar 315 hp diesels, a displacement hull with a very comfortable hull speed of close to 12 knots, probably be reached with one engine.  She will also have 3 bladed, full feathering, adjustable pitch props, so operating with one engine is easily done. Her top speed under power will be in the 20 knot range, but for economy probably 15 mph will be held for cruise.  Motor sail at reduce throttle and comfortable at 15 to 18 mph.

Another concept artist offered up his ideas, based on what he heard the client was after, this with the help of Peter Zin....  Both these cats have a lot of great ideas that look cool, now we just have to sort through what would really be the look desired.  The hulls will be started in a short time as Stuart puts the basics together and creates the full size hull pattern we need for the area at about the water line down.  This usually in a couple of months and some times he has something very close to what a client is after and can tweak that very fast and allow even a shorter start time, (if we have an opening for another start).

For a cat this size, 30 months is not to far off in how long it will take to build.  The clients will have several months to create the look they have in mind before they even have to worry about the insides final look.  We are not a production shop and have never built the same thing twice in our now 36 years of constructing custom, foam cored multihulls.  The slide show is about to start and will never get boring or long and if you want something not on the show, just ask, the clients photo album is about 20 plus pictures of progress a week.
